Why do I have to pay?
Many people in AA enjoy coming together for conferences and conventions—not just for the fellowship, but to celebrate and share our experience, strength, and hope on a larger scale.
AA conferences take place all over the world, and they’re truly special events. They’re not regular AA meetings, but rather opportunities to deepen our connection, hear inspiring stories, and enjoy time together in recovery. Because they’re hosted in hotels or convention centers, there are necessary costs involved—like renting the space, providing coffee and meals, and covering travel and lodging for speakers. There's also the cost of materials like flyers, programs, and supplies that help make the event welcoming and organized.
These events are entirely self-supporting, and no group funds are used. Instead, they are made possible through registration fees. These fees help cover expenses, and the goal is always to break even—never to make a profit. When you register, you’re helping create a weekend full of recovery, connection, and joy—often for less than you'd spend on a typical weekend outing.
Everyone is welcome, and participation is always voluntary. In keeping with our tradition of self-support, we simply ask that each of us “pay our own way” if we choose to attend.
Thanks to the generosity of our community, scholarships are available for those who need them. In 2024, we were able to offer 90 scholarship registrations—and this year, we hope to do even more! We never want finances to be the reason someone misses out on this joyful experience. If cost is a concern, please reach out confidentially to Lizzy at convention@aanorthcarolina.org
If you’re able to support others, we warmly invite you to make a donation to the scholarship fund. Every contribution—no matter the size—helps ensure that everyone has the chance to be part of this incredible weekend.
